Representative appellate cases

  • Mandel v. Town of Orleans, 326 F.3d 267 (1st Cir. 2003).
    • In an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, Tom obtained the reversal of a federal court injunction barring a Town, its Police Chief, and two officers from enforcing child custody orders issued by Maryland and Massachusetts courts. The federal trial court judge later recused himself, and Tom obtained dismissal of the entire case against his clients.
  • Fisher v. Lint, 69 Mass. App. Ct 360 (2007).
    • In a case before the Massachusetts Appeals Court, Mr. Campbell successfully obtained dismissal of a civil rights lawsuit against his client, who had been sued by a former co-worker. The Appeals Court ordered the other party to pay the legal costs incurred by Mr. Campbell’s client.
  • Grieco v. Williams, 99 Mass. App. Ct. 1107 (2021).
    • In a case concerning the production and marketing of a documentary film, Tom obtained the dismissal of the defendant’s counterclaims before trial. At trial he won a verdict awarding more than $1 million to his client. On appeal, the Court dismissed the defendant’s arguments and awarded costs and fees to Tom’s client.
  • Barron v. Kolenda, 491 Mass. 408 (2023).
    • Tom co-wrote his client’s brief in this appeal of a Superior Court judgment. The case involved a citizen’s constitutional right to petition the government. After the brief was filed in the Appeals Court, the Supreme Judicial Court took the case to render its own decision. The Supreme Judicial Court reversed the judgment, struck down the Town’s rules for public participation in Town government meetings, and ordered the claims against a defendant Select Board member to go forward, in a significant extension of the free speech rights of Massachusetts citizens.
  • Tom was an adjunct law professor at Northeastern University School of Law from 1997 to 2015.
  • He was an elected member of his town’s School Committee from 2014–2016.
  • He was the vice chair of the board of Peace at Home, a non-profit agency focused on the prevention of domestic violence.
  • He served on a sub-committee of the Governor’s Commission on Sexual and Domestic Violence.
  • He served on the UMass Amherst Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2006 – 2013; and again from 2016 – 2023. Serving as the Association’s Vice President for Governance and a member of its Executive Committee for most of those time frames, Tom chaired multiple committees.
  • As a counselor and litigator, Tom is often called upon to steer clients through complex problems and disputes. For example, Tom counseled the Alumnae Association of a prominent women’s college during a major transition. In that engagement, he negotiated a change in executive leadership, followed by a realignment of the Association’s financial and administrative relationship with its parent institution. He negotiated a memorandum of understanding with the College that put the Association on a stable foundation for the long term.
