How the OBBBA creates new planning opportunities for manufacturers and closely held businesses

Recent changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) may provide significant tax benefits for manufacturers and other capital-intensive businesses. The legislation modifies the limitations on business interest deductions, allowing certain companies to deduct a greater portion of financing costs associated with growth and expansion. Collectively, these provisions aimed to encourage domestic investment, expand production capacity, and support research and development activities.

One of the most notable changes is the extension of the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction, which allows many owners of pass-through entities, including LLCs, partnerships, and S corporations, to continue benefiting from a deduction equal to 20% of qualified business income.

The legislation also expands depreciation incentives for capital investment. Businesses can deduct a larger amount of qualifying equipment and property purchases. While manufacturing often requires large capital investments, these provisions can improve cash flow, as companies can recover the cost of investment much more quickly.

Manufacturers planning construction and facility expansion may also benefit from the provisions affecting production property. Accelerated depreciation opportunities for manufacturing facilities could make new construction projects more financially efficient. Furthermore, manufacturers will be motivated to develop and construct new spaces.

Starting in 2025, the OBBBA introduced immediate deductibility for many research and development expenses. This change is also highly beneficial for businesses with significant investments in innovation and product development. At D’Ambrosio LLP, we continue to monitor developments affecting manufacturers and business owners throughout Massachusetts. Companies considering significant investments, expansion projects, or strategic transactions should consult with legal and tax professionals to understand how these changes may impact their operations.
