The Future of Advanced Manufacturing in Massachusetts?

Despite Massachusetts’ historic strength in robotics—spanning defense, logistics, medical, and manufacturing sectors—concerns are growing that our state is losing its edge. Fady Saad, who has spent over a decade investing in early-stage robotics ventures as co-founder of MassRobotics and a venture capitalist Cybernetix Ventmes, notes that fewer high-quality robotics startups are emerging locally, forcing his fund to look outside Massachusetts for investments. He calls on state officials to pay more attention to the sector, arguing that while policy focus has shifted toward climatetech, life sciences, and artificial intelligence, robotics remains the physical embodiment of AI and deserves continuous support.

At D’Ambrosio LLP we assist our clients on navigating the often stormy waters from which new ventures are formed.  Our state’s legacy in robotics has been built through waves of innovation, jumpstarted by Department of Defense-funded pioneers like Boston Dynamics, to Kiva Systems, who kicked off our state’s logistic-robots trend, to a third wave of “pick-and-place robotics companies” such as RightHand Robotics, with complementing warehouses.

Looking ahead, D’Ambrosio LLP predicts that the next major wave will center on robotics and similar advanced manufacturing, especially in the area of national defense.  DLLP is committed to sustaining the Commonwealth’s traditionally favorable ecosystem for new ventures and assisting our clients over the regulatory hurdles that sometimes derail new development opportunities in Massachusetts.
